Advice for minor ailments

With so many students to care for, it is a good idea if you can avoid going to the medical centre unless you have to.

Certain conditions may not require treatment so please read the advice below before you contact the centre.

Sore throats

Sore throats are usually viral, meaning antibiotics will not help. Gargle with two soluble aspirin four times a day. If you can see pus (a whitish-yellow, yellow or yellow-brown residue) down your throat or you still feel unwell after 72 hours please make an appointment with the Student Medical Centre.

Dental symptoms

Rinse your mouth with hot salt water, take painkillers and contact your dentist at the next available opening time.

Diarrhoea and vomiting

For tummy cramps take two paracetamol every six hours. For fluid replacement caused by diarrhoea, drink either cooled water (mix a litre of cooled water with a teaspoon of salt and eight teaspoons of sugar), or Coca-Cola (which tastes better).Cautiously start starchy foods as your symptoms resolve. If symptoms persist for 48 hours please contact the Surgery.
