Preparing to study

Studying is like a journey. It needs some planning.

We want you to get the maximum benefit from your lectures, seminars and other activities.

To do that you need to prepare well.

If you plan and prepare for each step carefully you are more likely to succeed.

For example, if you go to a lecture without any preparation it will probably be ok, but you will learn much more if you have prepared for the lecture by doing some reading first.

If you are well prepared it will also be easier for you to contribute to discussions and ask questions in lectures and seminars.

Effective studying is obviously crucial to your success.

If something happens that makes it difficult for you to study, for example if you are ill, homesick or have personal problems, please don't worry.

There is plenty of support at the university to help you.

Question 1 - What do you think would help you to manage your learning journey?

Here are a few ideas... can you think of any more?

  • Have you done the recommended reading for each lecture beforehand?
  • Have you attended the lecture and contributed to seminars?
  • Have you reviewed your lecture and seminar materials?
  • Have you done any additional reading to extend your learning?
  • Have you attended labs and completed lab write-ups?
  • Have you discussed learning topics with friends and others in your seminar group?

Have you thought about keeping a learning diary in which you can jot down ideas, thoughts, questions to ask, etc?

Remember, that lectures are only the start, and in order to achieve the highest mark, you must develop the ability to research, read and expand on what you have learnt.

Developing Independent Learning

Independent learning occurs when a student takes responsibility for their own work and learning, making informed choices and taking responsibility for deciding what they need to do in order to learn. During your time at University you will be expected to develop your independent learning skills, recognising what activities you need to do to enhance your learning and not being entirely dependent upon your tutors. Towards the end of most courses students have to complete a final project or dissertation, which is a piece of work they undertake with minimum supervision or direction.

Every student is different, both in what they want to achieve and how they can best go about it in order to succeed. This is down to your independent learning and this will be unique to your needs and motivation.

Question 2 - Can you answer these questions?

  • How do I know if I am studying in the right way?
  • How do I know whether I am really improving my understanding of the subject?
  • How do I know if I’m studying in a way which will lead to success?

Perhaps some of your answers to question 1 will help you to think about this.

If you put effort into preparing carefully for each stage of your studies, you will be more aware about the learning process and this will make it clearer for you and make you more likely to succeed.

Of course, your studies will be challenging and some topics will challenge you more than others. We aim to help you to become a confident and independent learner. Now, have a look at the Study Skills section.
