This is where we can let you know about any developments at the university
If you're new to BU - this section is going to be particularly useful to you as this section has plenty of information you will need to know
Hopefully you have now completed your online registration but if not please do so now. Please also check the arrangements for re-enrolment (this should have already been sent to you, if not please contact askBU).
If you haven't yet arranged your accommodation you can have a look at our Studentpad pages, which has information about privately owned lets near to the university. If you are living in a residential area, please give then it is important to think about how to live as part of the community.
Over the summer months we have been reviewing all of the feedback that you have provided over the last year and have made following changes to improve your experience here at BU.
Whether you are due to undertake a work placement or graduating at the end of the year, the Placements and Careers Service is here to help. Numerous improvements have been made over the summer ranging from the new extra-curricular and careers resources centre which can be found in the Edge Student Development Centre (outside the Library), to the new online Placements and Careers system (MyCareerHub), coming soon, where you can make bookings with advisors and search for vacancies directly.
Over the summer we have looked at student feedback in order to make improvements to the current online timetable including anew cancellation functionality which informs you via email (and SMS if you choose) when an event is cancelled up to 24 hours in advance.
For those students who are eligible for a car parking permit, we have introduced a new online application system.
If you are a final year student, you will be contacted by Ipsos MORI in Spring 2012 to complete the National Student Survey (NSS). Please do try to fill it in; your comments both from that and our own Student Experience Survey enable us to improve what we do. You can see some if the actions that we have taken on the ‘You said, we did' page on the Student Portal.
Would you like to be involved in the future development of BU? ContriBUte is a new scheme, whereby students who would like to feed back on current and future developments register with us and then get involved with individual developments within BU.
Over the summer we have been upgrading many of our buildings.
We have also made some major changes to IT over the summer.
On the 1st August 2011, the Additional Learning Needs service changed its name to Additional Learning Support. The service has been restructured and we have been reviewing our processes and procedures to better meet the needs of students with a disability or learning support need. Fear not though, the same dedicated staff will be there to help you develop your learning strategies!
If you have a learning need that may require support, but you have not yet contacted us, you should do so now.
You will need to provide comprehensive information about your needs, so please bring all available information to your appointment. This will include information about previous support you may have received at school or college, specialist reports (Consultant or Educational Psychologists) and any other information that you feel is relevant.
On occasion we are able to make reasonable adjustments to accommodate individual needs. However, this is always dependent on a student's specific circumstances and the academic and professional standards required for the course.
Some support can take time to put in place so if you don't make us aware of your needs at an early stage, we may not be able to provide the full support to which you may be entitled.
Whatever year you're in, it's never too late to get involved with your Students' Union. Visit our brand new website to find out how you can make the most out of your student experience during your time at BU.
If you are paying your own fees, it is now possible to pay in three instalments.
There have been some slight changes to the assessment regulations over the Summer Period which students should be aware of.
And remember, if you do have any questions or problems at any time during the year you can contact askBU or the Students' Advice Centre.
