We want to bring you the very latest software at BU.
Student computers across Talbot and Lansdowne campuses have all been updated to Windows 7 and MS Office 2010.
If you have not used either Windows 7 or Microsoft Office 2010, you may wish to have a look at our hints and tips guide in order to get the most out of the new features.
Workshops, demonstrations, learning materials, exercises and a knowledge base are all available to help you answer any questions you have.
Important information to know:
All student accounts have been successfully migrated into a new domain called STUDENT.
All Open Access computers and others with Windows 7 installed should be set to the STUDENT by default. You only need to type in your user name and password.
If you are using a Windows XP computer please select STUDENT from the drop down menu by Domain if it is not showing STUDENT.
You will be automatically connected to our pull printing service. To send your printing to a virtual print server, go to any of the Ricoh printers on either campus, login using your student ID card and select the files you want to print.
Benefits of this are that you only print what you want and pay for what you print.
Laser jet printers are in some computer labs. If you want to print to these you can connect directly to the printer and print immediately. Laser jet printers are 5p per page and only print in black and white.
More details on printing, as well as copying and scanning can be found here.
Can I still access my University email/Skydrive?
Yes, these services are not affected by the upgrade.
Differences in the desktop
The desktop will look new and refreshed. There is a link on the desktop called My Documents. This is linked to your H drive. All of your files will still be there and accessible.
Your files
The My Pictures and My Music folders will not have your name as part of the folder name. All of your pictures and music will be available.
Office 2010
Office 2010 is the upgrade to Office 2007. The Office Button has been replaced with a tab called File. All the items that were under the Office Button are now available on the File tab.
How I can increase my skills?
IT Services can offer you access to learning materials for Windows 7 and Office 2010. We are part of the Microsoft IT Academy agreement. Please state whether you want to use the Windows 7 learning materials or those for Office 2010, or Word 2010 or Excel 2010 or PowerPoint 2010 or Access 2010 or Project 2010.
We can offer Microsoft Certified Application Specialist exams in Office 2010 products or Office 2007 products at no charge. Take this opportunity to increase your skills, save you time and gain a qualification that is recognised everywhere.
Some restrictions
You can still change mouse button settings, task bar settings and the Quick Access Tool bar but anything you change will be lost when you log out. By restricting what changes are permanent helps us to ensure the computers function as efficiently as possible.
