Volleyball

We are highly committed to the development of volleyball locally and work closely with Volleyball England and Wessex Volleyball to ensure this.

Competition

Bournemouth University has two teams competing in the BUCS leagues, a men's team and women's team and both play in Tier 1A.

Both teams enter Volleyball England's Indoor Student Cup and talented individuals are encouraged to enter the Volleyball England Beach Student Cup.

Training & coaching

The University teams are coached throughout the year by a team of coaches. These include Andy Jones, Mo Glover and Vince Joyce. Jeff Brehaut (2x Olympic final referee) is our head referee and supports sportBU with its volleyball development.

Training includes:

• Squad training twice a week
• Technical training session once a week
• Weekly circuits training
• Strength and Conditioning and fitness support

Additional opportunities

Players have the chance to represent sportBU in the Bournemouth and Poole local league and also in the regional league. sportBU fully support athletes who are selected to compete in English and British Universities squad.

Scholarships

All players who have played at a regional or semi professional standard will be eligible to apply for a scholarship to support them in their sport whilst at university.

Partnerships

sportBU have extensive links with Wessex Volleyball Club and players have the opportunity to train and play for Wessex in the National League (both indoor and beach). Wessex Volleyball club is one of the most successful clubs in England with National League Women's and Men's teams. In the last ten years, Wessex under 15,16 and 18 teams have all won national competitions and our Mini Volleyball teams have won numerous South West titles. The club also has excellent coaching opportunities in conjunction with BU.

Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) Beach Volleyball

BU is currently home to Volleyball England's Beach Volleyball Development Programme which is supported by TASS. This programme runs from May to August and all athletes receive substantial coaching and strength and conditioning support. Athletes are fully supported throughout the Volleyball England Beach Tour.
